An emphatic win by Amphitrite in the Group 2 $200,000 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington today could temp trainer Darren Weir to back the filly up in the Thousand Guineas next week.

Weir was initially uncertain where he would head with Amphitrite but conceded that the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield next Saturday could be a good option.

“We probably have to go there (the Thousand Guineas), I suppose,” Weir said.

“It might just all come too quick, obviously back up next week. But looking at her in the yard I thought she looked great today, she was big and strong so she might be able to back up.”

“She has been going along really well and has just taken the progression after each start.”

Winning jockey Craig Williams settled Amphitrite ($3.20 favourite) in the middle of the pack and brought her with a well-timed run to beat her stablemate Krone ($5) by one and three quarter lengths with third placegetters Verry Elleegant ($4.20) giving Weir the trifecta.

“She got a lovely run there today, I love that three wide cart up in a race because you can just get going,” Weir said

“It was a terrific win and all three ran well.”

Weir said that Krone was could also be heading to the Thousand Guineas while Verry Elleegant was looking like a she would be suited in the Group 1 $1m Kennedy Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 8.

“Krone definitely heads that way (to the Thousand Guineas) and the filly that ran third she is probably more like an Oaks sort of horse.”

Thousand Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au has Amphitrite marked at $8.50 while Krone is list as a $13 chance.
