Japanese import Brave Smash broke through for his maiden Group 1 win in the $500,000 italktravel Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield today.

Craig Williams rode for luck sitting just behind the leaders and when the split came in the straight, Brave Smash ($4.80 favourite) knew exactly what to do and dashed through to claim the lead at the 250m before going on to record a very valuable three quarters of a length win.

Winning trainer Darren Weir provided the quinella with Tosen Stardom ($6) finding some of his best form again and the leading trainer also saddle up the fourth placegetter Humidor who ran on strongly from the back.

In among the Weir horses in third position was the Team Hawkes trained Showtime ($7).

Brave Smash was an eye catching unlucky last start third to Hartnell in the Group 1 $500,000 Ladbrokes C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield a fortnight ago and was a deserved winner.

Weir will run Brave Smash and Tosen Stardom in the Group 2 $200,000 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 17 before heading to Sydney for the Autumn Carnival and The Championships.

“He put the writing on the wall last start and he carried that form here today,” Weir said.

“It was good when he got a bit of cover and then he just needed the luck.

“We felt we had the horse ion the right order but just need a bit of luck from the barrier.”

“He will run a mile.”

“Fot Brave Smash to get a Group 1 is a huge result for everyone.”

“Tosen Stardom will head to the Blamey and then up to Sydney for the Mile race and Brave Smash will head that way too.”
