Trainer Chris Waller wouldn’t be surprised if a fresh Life Less Ordinary causes an upset in the 2019 Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on Day One of The Championships on Saturday.
Life Less Ordinary is rated a $51 chance for the Doncaster Mile at Ladbrokes.com.au but Waller said the English import is going into the feature Mile race in top condition.
Waller believes that Life Less Ordinary produces his best form early in his preparation and the seven year old will be having his first run back since finishing third in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day last year.
“He heads to the Doncaster fresh up but he is a noted first up performer with a very good fresh record,” Waller said.
“His last race was in December and he had a very busy Spring so it hasn’t been too hard to get him back to this stage of fitness.”
Life Less Ordinary has had two recent barrier trials in preparation for his return to the race track and Waller is happy with his fitness levels.
“His fitness has been helped by two nice trials with the most recent being last Friday over 1200m where he remained on the bridle throughout and recovered well from the work out.”
Waller can see Corey Brown positioning Life Less Ordinary around the middle of the pack from a mid-field barrier and with his share of luck in the straight will be charging home.
“He gets into the race with a very nice weight, barrier ten I see as a perfect draw for him as he doesn’t like to be too close so if we can utilise the gate and have him just behind the mid-field he will finish off very strongly,” Waller said.
“He does need luck to win but if the gaps opened up at the right time I do expect him to be charging at the line with Corey Brown aboard.”
Waller is set to have four runners in the Doncaster Mile and as well as Life Less Ordinary, will saddle up Unforgotten ($15), Shillelagh ($19) and I Am Serious ($26).
The Team Hawkes trained three year old Brutal and Lindsay Park’s Fifty Stars share the top spot in the Doncaster Mile market order at $5.50 at Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Alizee at $7.50 and Hartnell and Fundamentalist at $9.50.
