Weir has six of the sixteen nominations for the Australia Stakes, which includes Group 1 winners Brave Smash, Voodoo Lad and Land Of Plenty as well as Fifty Stars and Chauffeur, and is leaning towards Whispering Brook as the pick of the crop.

“She’s done really well and she galloped really good this morning (Monday),’’ Weir told racing.com.

“She’s had a couple of runs under her belt. I would say she will have the fitness edge.”

Whispering Brook started her racing care in Western Australia under the care of Perth trainer Simon Miller but has won four from six starts since being transferred to Weir’s Victorian stables.

Whispering Brook was spelled after finishing fifth to Shoals in the Group 1 $1m Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in May but has won both her outings at Flemington over the Summer months.

The Hinchinbrook mare scored first up over 1100m on December 15 and then made it back to back wins at Flemington in the Group 3 $160,000 Standish Handicap (1200m) on January 1.

Whispering Brook won five races in the West under Miller who did campaign the mare during her three year old season in Melbourne over the 2016 Spring Carnival which resulted in two placings from four starts.

She was narrowly beaten when second in the Listed $120,000 Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at The Valley and then two starts later was third to Global Glamour in the Group 1 $500,000 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.

The final field for the 2019 Australia Stakes will be released on Wednesday, January 23.
