5 year old entire Raghu saluted in the Ladbrokes Peninsula Cup yesterday on debut in Australia. The well travelled son of Showcasing ground out the mile first-up for new connections to the JWR stable, Kennic & Willie Lui.

“It’s more of a relief than excitement, we’ve put a lot of groundwork into him to get him fit enough first-up” Trainer Jason Warren commented post-race.

Prior to a failed stint in Hong Kong, Raghu possessed strong form in New Zealand as a 3 year old. Winning the 3yo Karaka Mile and placing in the NZ Derby soon saw him being shipped off to Hong Kong. “Caspar Fownes is a good friend of mine and said the horse never settled over there, and upon arrival to Denistoun Park you could tell the horse was absolutely fried”, said Warren.

After giving the horse an extended break to clear his head, Warren commenced a campaign with him and knew straight away he was working with a quality animal, “Even when you see him just trot and canter, he is such an excellent mover”.

Raghu will now set his sights on the Eclipse Stakes in 12 days time, a $150,750 Group 3 event over 1800m. “Today’s run will really bring his fitness on and should have him primed for the Eclipse”. Yesterday’s win brings Raghu’s prizemoney tally to $261,361.
