Racing fans witnessed a Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) for the ages on Saturday as Mark Zahra and Super Seth flew home to pinch a win at the line over Alligator Blood.
The race looked all said and done as Alligator Blood led by a length and a half with just over 150m to go. Trainer David Vandyke was already cheering, but in the blink of an eye, Super Seth lived up to his name as Anthony Freedman’s three-year-old let down perfectly from the widest part of the track to go on and win by a nose.
The colt by Dundeel’s last win came on August 31st in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) on the same track. After running fifth during last fortnight’s Guineas Prelude (1400m), Super Seth was installed as a $7.50 chance with Ladbrokes prior to Saturday’s Group 1 feature race.

It was also a special moment for Zahra, who won his first-ever Caulfield Guineas after missing out on a ride last year.
“I just lost my spot round the bend but when I finally got into balance and leveled out he let rip” Zahra said of the run.
“I tell you that first glass of champagne tonight is going to go down very nicely. You’ll get him further, it’s just great because I had a bit to do with him and I know a few of the owners, it’s great when plans come together and sky is the limit.”
Alligator Blood entered Saturday’s race hoping to become the first unbeaten horse to win the Guineas. That wasn’t to be though, as punters who got on board the $5.00 second-elect were left guttered.
The winkers back on looked to prove the difference for Super Seth on Saturday as talks now turn towards a potential last-minute spot in next fortnight’s Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley.
