Winning jockey Ben Melham is tipping that there are many more wins to come for classy mare Pippie after she scored an all the way win in the Group 3 $160,000 Moët & Chandon Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield today.

Melham took Pippie straight to the front from barrier seven in the twelve horse field and the John and Chris Meagher trained mare was never headed to go on to record a comfortable win in the end.

“She did a tremendous job, she is a terrific filly and she is going to win better races,” Melham said.

Spanish Whisper ($15) ran on from midfield to secure second spot just ahead of the Team Hawkes trained Sylvia’s Mother ($4).

Melham had Pippie under a tight hold travelling one of the fence out in front and he wasn’t in that much of a hurry to test her out in the straight until he really had to.

Pippie was still under a tight hold at the 300m, but once Melham released the brakes on the $2.05 favourite, the result was never in doubt.

“She had a bit against her with the head breeze and looked the only leader but nothing has led and won into the breeze today,” Melham said.

“She goes a good gallop this filly. Thought the fence was a little bit worn and I felt the only genuine 1200m horse Sylvia’s Mother was drawn in one so I was happy to stay off the rail and let her face the breeze as well.”

Today’s win was Pippie’s fourth from only six race starts and took her prizemoney earnings to over $230,000.
